Gotta love those tiny details! #34

Today we’ll talk about two more styles for British tanks before we move on to other nations. The tanks left are the A43 BP prototype and the GSOR 1008.

Hobart’s Funnies – A43 BP prototype

This tank wasn’t even released, but it already has a rather interesting style.

This emblem shows that the tank belongs to the 79th Armoured Division, which is also confirmed by the description. It was a specialised division, operating rather strange vehicles, often called “Hobart’s Funnies” after the commander – Major General Percy Hobart. They were designed for landing on beaches, clearing the mine fields, destroying defences, assaulting the enemy lines with flamethrowers etc. Some sub-units operated the Churchill Crocodile, a flamethrower variant of a regular Churchill, and that’s the tank we’ll focus on a little bit more.

The markings right here made it possible to identify the unit this tank belongs to – the B Squadron of the 141st Regiment Royal Armoured Corps, part of the 31st Tank Brigade, which belonged to the 79th Armoured Division. This unit fought on Crocodiles from the Battle of Normandy until the end of the war.

The name is interesting, because thanks to Mike’s research we know that the Churchill Crocodile named “SANDLING” existed, albeit it was part of the C Squadron, not B Squadron of the 141st Regiment RAC. We also know the number of the tank – T173174, the same number is visible on the Churchill on the second pic in this post (but the name painted on that one is “SANDGATE”, the name of another Churchill from the C Squadron). I think the story behind this style goes kinda like that: in this alternative reality the Black Prince prototype was sent to the unit known for using weird tanks for evaluation. There it supported Crocodiles and it was named “SANDLING II” after one of them.

The last little detail – a characteristic British turtle shell helmet.

Polar Star – GSOR 1008

This style is built around the theme of Arctic hunting, many details refer to that.

A standard British searchlight with a narwhal, an animal native to Arctic waters, painted on it.

A regular Browning M1919 machine gun, but this time with a walrus skull on top of it.

An iconic British rifle – the Lee-Enfield, judging by the barrel it may be a No. 4 Mk I variant. After the war it was a popular hunting rifle and many of them were sold to civilians in countries like Canada, so that would fit the theme.

That’s a detail that I wanted to point out. I couldn’t find a real drum that looked exactly like that, but it’s close to the Native American shaman drums, especially the style of the drawing is very similar.

Multiple pieces of equipment helpful both for hunting and for survival. There’s probably way more pieces than I could spot and identify, but for sure there are pieces of clothing (coat, boots), some kitchen utensils, skis, snowshoes, a blowtorch, a stove and smoke ducts (as seen on the Centurion AX)… And many more.

Conclusion

We’re getting close to the end, there are only few styles left. The next on the list is the one for the 122TM, but I have to think what to do with it, as it’s very detailed, but I don’t think there are many historical elements… If there are any. We’ll see what to do with it when we get there.
