In the sandbox article for artillery WG stated: “Artillery can be treated in different ways, but it is popular among players. This is shown by the large number of battles that are played daily using this vehicle type. Our statistics show that about half of all commanders occasionally choose SPGs when going into battle.“
I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit since I read it. I think it’s meant to convey that we, the players, really want artillery in the game, but when you think about it I don’t think it means what they think it means, because there are two campaigns that more or less require you to play artillery.
Sure, you can technically avoid doing it, if you’re really bloody good, and don’t mind some super hard missions, but in reality I’m sure at least 95% of the people doing the campaigns are using artillery. Most of these people, like me, don’t really enjoy artillery, it’s just that we cant actually complete the campaigns without it. It took me 1344 games in artillery to complete them both, and I loathed pretty much all of them.
The sentence should really be: “Despite being basically required to complete our campaigns, only half our players will actually play artillery, and even then only occasionally.“
